4th July

The little girl wanted to stay longer in a comfortable bed, but because she couldn’t hold her urge to go to toilet so she woke up slightly. Despite being drowsy, she was still aware of the situation by walking carefully so serenity remained still.

On her way to the toilet, there was light glowing emitted from the mechanical room. Curious, then she went there to find an engineer working hardly. As she observed, the girl was working joyfully over something mechanical and the expression she showed was none of the faces the little girl had ever seen, which made her to be interested in whatever the engineer was doing.

Later, the girl noticed her presence by shadows coming from outside. She stopped working and glanced to see who she was. It was none other than the cute kid.

“Little, you’re still awake? It’s almost 5 am and we are departing at 8 am, so you should rest.”

“Ah, sorry, I was going to toilet. But… how about you though….” Asked the little girl worriedly about health.

“Aha, since we found this old robot few days ago, I can’t really just let it be. I felt I had to repair it.” The engineer girl replied with weak voices as if she had no choices.

“…. Can he be repaired?”

“This is an old model, IR-451, and I have little knowledge about this model. But I tried my best by researching through hidden networks. After getting references enough, I started repairing t. Though, I’m still unsure whether he will function or not. Its dissection was very difficult and complicated. Not to mention the specifications, the parts are so old that I had to go to the black market and dump secretly….. No, not even the black market would have the part. Of course, this requires a lot of money so…. Please don’t tell the captain about this ‘kay?” She smirked.

“Why would you go that far just for old robot.?”

Heh.” She turned to be silent for a moment and then replied after thinking of an answer. “To me, this is more than a mere old robot. This IR-415 is more than fifty years old. He might have some untold past that we never hear at present. Maybe he just happened to live happily in golden time before everything fell to become like what we see now…..”

“Ah, sorry. I shouldn’t tell you something difficult like that.” She snapped back to reality before continuing.

The little girl didn’t follow the engineer quite well, but she continued asking anyway. “So how’s he now?”

“Aah, well, as you can see, the appearance is still dirty and full of dirt and scratches. Some outer parts are broken, but inner parts are much worse. And I have yet to find the suitable left hand to replace this broken one. But, I believe I have at least repaired its main processor. I can try to turn him on, wait a minute.”

She reached her mini laptop whose cable was connected directly to the robot, opening some programs full of codes the little girl could not comprehend.

A few minutes after inputting simple codes into the programs, the robot showed a sudden movement that surprised the little girl.

“It moved!”

“Only a little though, it still needs more works.”

“How long will it take?” The little girl asked cheerfully as though she would have an interesting friend to play with.

“Eer… Alone can’t make it fast, so…. According to my own skill, I suppose around two or three months? That’s if no incidents happen in the midst of this reconstruction.”

“Aaw, that long huh….” Her shoulder dropped.

“Don’t worry, I will make sure it lasts shorten than the estimated time. I promise you will get a new friend soon.” The engineer girl smiled after knowing what her wish was.

“You really love robots, don’t you?”

“Aha…. Yeah, I love them. I treated him like he’s my own child. I already made tons of little robots, but they have never been big like this one. This is like my only chance, so I’m going to put all skills I have in use.”

She said as if she had no tomorrows to spend.

The story stops here.

Drawing this took a lot of time, and I used leisure wisely during the schedule of University. My back hurts a little, but I think they're worth it anyway. Though, I think the shading is still not enough in my opinion. I still need more practice.

Well... It's not like there's another way, because the only way to get better is to keep practicing. And it doesn't really matter where you go to ask every lecturers or seniors for instructions or you search for plenty of references, the answer would still be same regardless of the difference within experience and that answer is practice.

So... Once again.... I must practice more.... MORE!!!!

I want to get better in shading and anything.
